Senior Software Engineer – Desktop Applications About the Role At MKS Instruments' Controls Business Unit, we develop advanced software solutions for industrial automation and control systems. We are looking for a highly capable, hands-on Senior Software Engineer to take technical ownership of our desktop software platform, used for configuration, engineering, and lifecycle management of industrial automation systems. This position is for an experienced engineer who combines strong technical expertise with independent thinking, proactive execution, and a genuine sense of ownership. In this hands-on technical leadership role, you will independently drive technical decisions and execution, solve complex engineering challenges, proactively identify opportunities for improvement, and deliver software solutions from concept to completion while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams. You will work closely with software, firmware, FPGA, hardware, systems, QA, and product management teams across international development sites. You Will Make an Impact By Taking end-to-end technical ownership of a modern desktop software platform, including its architecture, implementation, quality, maintainability, and evolution. Independently leading the design and development of complex software features using TypeScript, React, Electron, Node.js, and related technologies. Driving technical decisions, evaluating alternatives, and selecting practical, robust, and maintainable solutions. Proactively identifying technical challenges, architectural improvements, risks, and opportunities, taking initiative to address them. Translating product requirements and complex industrial engineering workflows into clear software designs and intuitive graphical user interfaces. Developing and integrating application components with embedded devices, industrial controllers, communication networks, and external systems. Taking responsibility for bringing software solutions from requirements through development, integration, testing, and successful release. Resolving complex technical issues independently, including challenges spanning application, communication, and system layers. Driving software quality through sound architectural practices, code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, and continuous improvement. Collaborating across engineering disciplines and influencing technical decisions through expertise and sound engineering judgment. Skills You Bring B.Sc. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline. 5+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated technical ownership of complex software applications. Strong proficiency in TypeScript or JavaScript, with hands-on experience developing applications using React or comparable frameworks. Experience designing and developing desktop applications using Electron or similar technologies. Strong software architecture and system design capabilities, with proven ability to independently design, develop, integrate, and deliver complex software solutions. Experience developing application services, middleware, and integrations involving asynchronous operations, APIs, and external systems. Solid understanding of modern software engineering practices, including Git, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD. Self-driven, proactive, and accountable, with excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication skills in English, and the ability to lead technical work independently while collaborating across international teams. Preferred Skills / Nice to Have Experience in one or more of the following areas is an advantage, though none is individually required. Experience developing industrial automation software, engineering tools, device configuration applications, or industrial communication interfaces. Experience designing advanced graphical applications, such as CAD-like or IDE-like interfaces, graphical editors, engineering workstations, and visualization tools. Experience with Node.js, Python, Linux, or real-time operating systems and development environments. Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools, AI agents, or AI-driven workflow automation to improve software engineering productivity and quality. Experience with advanced automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and software development process improvements. Familiarity with functional safety, industrial cybersecurity, or secure software development practices.
